There’s only one more season coming of Netflix’s behemoth Stranger Things, but the empire is just beginning. A stage play debuts in London later this year; a mysterious spinoff series is coming eventually; and now, there’s another feather in the Duffer brothers’ cap: Netflix has announced an animated Stranger Things series is in the works as well.

Of course, they didn’t say much of anything else about it. In a statement, Matt and Ross Duffer said, “We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling.”
They also praised the work of Eric Robles, whose team is developing the animated show. Robles has worked on Fanboy & Chum Chum, Jacob Two-Two, RoboCop: Alpha Commando, and a whole bunch of other animated series.
The cartoon will have Stranger Things’ production mainstays on board as well: the Duffers, Shawn Levy (who has also directed episodes of the flagship show), and Dan Cohen.
But what will any of these things be about? Your guess is as good as anyone’s. The stage play, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, is set in Hawkins in 1959, so other eras are certainly on the table. Villain backstories? The history of the kids’ parents? A different town in which terrible things happen? Who can say.
